Case Study: Itility Data Centre Makes Move To Multi Power

Manchester data centre Itility makes the move to our modular UPS Multi Power.

Located just a couple of miles from Manchester city centre, Itility is a privately-owned, high-performance data centre and hosting specialist, providing colocation and disaster recovery solutions.

Through its purpose-built, state-of-the-art 8,900 square foot facility, the company provides dedicated and shared hosting, application hosting, Cloud, IP transit and disaster recovery solutions to SMEs across the UK.

Its original UPS system was installed in 2011 comprising three 400 kVA Master Plus units. By 2021, one of the UPS reached its end of service life, with another of the units rapidly approaching a similar fate.

Replacement Required

Itility turned to Specialist Power Systems, an authorised Riello UPS reseller and service partner, to specify a cost-effective and efficient replacement.

Following an in-depth site survey and extensive dialogue with the customer, Specialist Power Systems proposed a modular solution combining a lower initial capital investment with the flexibility for easy system expansion in the future.

Riello UPS’s Multi Power provided the perfect mix of scalable, secure, and high-quality power protection.

Making The Move To Multi Power

To minimise downtime on the install day, the new modular UPS was delivered to site the previous day. Specialist Power Systems’ certified safe disposal team isolated, uninstalled, decommissioned, and removed the old units, before installing the new Multi Power solution.

An external bypass switch enabled the old units to be isolated, whilst still maintaining the customer load off the mains supply the entire time. The complete removal, installation, and commissioning took less than a day.

Multi Power’s compact and modular design needed a significantly smaller footprint than the previous installation.

While compared to the older units, which operated at 85% efficiency, the new installation is capable of up to 96.5% efficiency. Due to the scalable design of the new modular solution, the client load level sits higher in the efficiency window and is set to deliver thousands of pounds worth of energy savings every year.

“By installing a newer, greener modular alternative we delivered a scalable and flexible design where our customer can simply add more power modules when the business requires more.

“Giving them a pay as you grow solution meant less capital investment from the start, lower cost of ownership, a more efficient UPS, and significant energy savings.”
