Case Study: Options Technology Makes The Move To Multi Power

Multi Power’s combination of efficiency, performance and compact footprint make it the choice to protect the data centre of financial IT infrastructure provider Options Technology.

Options Technology are the number one provider of IT infrastructure to global capital markets firms, supporting their operations and ecosystems.

Providing high performance managed trading infrastructure and cloud-enabled managed services to over 550 firms globally, Options Technology’s clients include leading global investment banks, hedge funds, funds of funds, proprietary trading firms, brokers, dealers, private equity houses, and exchanges.

Authorised Riello UPS reseller and service partner Computer Power Protection (CPP) has a long-standing relationship with Options Technology dating back to 2009 when CPP supplied, commissioned, and maintained 2 x Riello UPS Master Plus 400 kVA UPS standalone systems with associated batteries in an ‘A & B’ arrangement.

As demand for Options Technology’s services increased, so too did the infrastructure at its data centre, resulting in limited space for access around its existing UPS system.

The company decided it was time to update the UPS to increase capacity and resilience, and so engaged with CPP to review the existing installation and propose a suitable upgrade.

Why Move To Multi Power?

Due to the space constraints now faced in the data centre, CPP proposed 4 x Multi Power modular UPS systems in standalone configuration as the replacement.

Multi Power is our versatile and award-winning modular solution offering a choice of 15-25-42 kW power modules, along with a range of cabinet sizes. It gives data centre operators the risk-free scalability to ‘pay as you grow’ by adding in extra modules as and when required.

For this project, each of the Multi Power UPS would initially have 4 x 42 kW power modules installed to provide 126 kW N+1 redundancy, with capacity to add more power modules should the load increase.

With all preparation work carried out during normal working hours, the largest challenge to overcome involved breaking down the existing Master Plus 400 kVA UPS weighing 2,600 kg and over 1,600 mm wide into manageable sections and removing overnight at a weekend prior to installing and commissioning the replacement Multi Power UPS system in an agreed timescale.

The changeover works were completed over four separate weekends with one Multi Power installed each weekend, with Options Technology’s data centre now fully protected against short-term power outages by the Riello UPS systems.

“CPP have always been extremely professional and meticulous in their work so when it came to upgrading our existing UPS infrastructure, they were always going to be our number one choice.

“Several months of planning and staged migration weekends resulted in a seamless transfer over to the four new UPS with no downtime to our core infrastructure. A real testament to their work.”
